Types of Small Flying Bugs In House With Pictures Identification Guide

little bugs in house

While pill bugs are generally harmless to humans and pets, they are a nuisance indoors. Frequent appearances of these pests in your home may indicate a leak, high humidity, or poor drainage. Also, indoor pill bug infestations can attract other bugs, like centipedes, and damage indoor plants. Here is what you need to know about pill bugs and how to get rid of them. Bed bugs can enter your home by attaching on to your luggage or clothing when you travel or come in on used furniture you purchase secondhand. If you have bed bugs, you may wake up with small, red, itchy bumps or notice an offensive musty smell that you are unable to identify.

FAQ About Clover Mites

Brown beetles tend to have rounded, hard bodies, whereas cockroaches have slender bodies and long antennae. Also called the house borer, the common furniture beetle is a destructive flying pest in homes. The winged beetles have an elongated brown oval body with grooves along the wing cases.

What Are the Most Common Household Bugs in the United States?

Blowflies behave like houseflies, measuring 0.3” to 0.4” (8 – 10 mm) long. Drain flies are gray fuzzy flying bugs with broad moth-like hairy wings. The tiny, winged creatures measure around 0.1” (2.5 mm) and usually emerge at night or from dark places like sink drains or tend to hop over kitchen countertops.

What ants look like

Melissa Graham has worked with the BobVila.com team for 2 years. When she’s not wearing her writer’s hat, she’s chasing her two kids around their Dallas home, perfecting her baking skills, or reading the latest best-selling thriller. If you have been hiking or walking in parks or woodlands, checking yourself for ticks when returning home is always a good idea. Wasps and bees thrive in outdoor areas, such as gardens, parks, and flowering plants. They build nests in various locations, including trees, eaves, attics, and underground burrows.

However, small brown bugs like cockroaches, ants, or bed bugs scurrying along a baseboard or lurking in crevices could be a sign of a more extensive bug infestation. Identifying common house bugs is the first step in knowing how to get rid of them. Fungus gnats are small, black bugs with wings commonly seen hovering around potted house plants. These small flying household pests are attracted to damp environments, such as overwatered houseplants and decaying organic matter. The slender flying pests don’t harm plants but are nuisance bugs when flying around faces, noses, and eyes. Drugstore beetles are attracted to pantry items like grains, seeds, and packaged food products.

Types of House Bugs (With Pictures) – Identification Guide

However, it’s likely more are lurking, since these hard-shell small brown bugs reproduce so quickly. These are common small brown bugs in the house and are about ¼ to ½ inch long and have six legs and two long antennae. Ants are typically easy to identify with their three slender body parts, a thin waist, two antennae, and bulbous abdomen.

Termites

The best way to eliminate larder beetles is to store food in air-tight containers. Also, freezing food for a week can kill off these annoying house beetles. If you know how to identify them, you will know how to control them. Once the area is sealed and the trails are cleaned, residents will want to set up a liquid baiting system to first target the worker ants, then larvae and the queen ant. The worker ants will create a new trail to the bait which other ants will follow.

Signs of ladybugs

Jordan adds, Any item that looks contaminated should be thrown away." Moths and butterflies are both flying insects of the Lepidoptera group and look quite similar, but moths are nocturnal. If you're seeing these in your home, paying attention to where they're hovering will help you narrow down the moth type.

Signs of silverfish

little bugs in house

Silverfish are wingless insects that are white to brownish-grey or bluish-silver in color. They have a teardrop-shaped body and three long bristles on their rear. They thrive in moist climates and frequently move inside during the dryer months looking for moisture. While not harmful to you or your family, silverfish can be very destructive.

You can also make a DIY drain cleaning solution by mixing half a cup of salt, half a cup of baking soda, and a cup of vinegar. In the morning, pour boiling water into the drain to get rid of drain flies for good. Tidiness generally goes a long way in eliminating potential breeding sites. Cover trash cans, repair screens, and regularly empty and clean pet waste areas. To address termite infestations, professional treatment is often necessary.

Store off-season clothing and supplies in plastic storage bins, and take your dry goods out of their boxes and store them in containers with tight-fitting lids. Bedbugs are a much more common problem than most people want to believe. But people don't like to talk about their bedbug problems because they think there's a stigma of dirty homes attached to bedbugs. The fact is, bedbugs can show up in any kind of home, and apartments are particularly susceptible to bedbugs because of how often people move in and out.

These small pests feed on your cats or dogs and, if left uncontrolled, can lead to hair loss, skin infections, anxiety, and anemia. While fleas prefer animals because they have a lot of furs to hide in, they can bite humans. When they bite and suck your blood, they also secrete saliva into your bloodstream. This saliva contains allergens that can cause itching and, in some cases, a more severe allergic reaction that can cause shortness of breath. Treatment for fleas in the home also requires treatment and prevention for your pets.

A Guide to Clover Mites: How To Identify Tiny Red Bugs

You may also find shed skins or poppy seed-like frass around your mattress, furniture, and other areas of the house. If not treated in time, termites often cause significant damage to the structure of homes. Although they are incredibly annoying, the tiny flying bugs are harmless. To get rid of the flies, it’s vital to remove the breeding site by clearing all organic material from drains. Fleas are tiny brown biting bugs that measure 0.04” – 0.15” (1 – 4 mm) long. Fleas are so minuscule that the first signs of the annoying bugs are red, itchy bumps on the skin from flea bites.

The Tiny Brown Bugs Are Flying Around the House: Are These the Same or Different?

In spring and fall, you might see them congregating on walls, windows, and tree trunks. They are harmless but can be a nuisance if they find a way inside your home. The destructive larva of the small flying beetle looks like a fuzzy grain of rice.

Spider beetles have a similar appearance to a bed bug that has recently fed on blood.

Should the tiny black bugs become a bigger problem, it may be time for the resident to call a professional. A pest control professional can help get rid of the small black bugs in the house and address any underlying issues that may be causing the infestation. They can help detect bug entry points and seal up areas of the home that may be inviting unwelcome critters.

Wood destroying pests

The larvae of clothes moths can do plenty of damage in the home. The creamy-white worm-like maggots feed on clothes, carpets, rugs, upholstery, and other fabrics. Therefore, spotting one of these grayish rounded bugs in the house means there may be a large infestation. Moisture and dampness are the main things that attract pillbugs—also called sowbugs, slaters, roly-polies, and doodlebugs.

Their most distinguishing feature is their densely hairy wings, giving them a moth-like appearance. The fuzzy flies are typically noticeable in kitchens or bathrooms where they live in slimy filth in drains. Signs of black fungus gnats in your home are small flies near houseplants. Because of their small size and erratic flying behavior, they are easy to mistake for fruit flies or drain flies. Bed bugs are among the worst common household bugs I’ve ever dealt with, both as a professional exterminator and homeowner.

Food pests

Flesh flies are identified by their dark gray to black bodies and sometimes have a greenish or bluish metallic sheen. In addition, you may notice stripes or checkered patterns on their back. While they don’t pose any danger or risks, they’re still pesky to have around and can be discouraging to see.

A tick is about the size of a sunflower seed and usually has a black or brown body. The tiny bugs become engorged if they bury into the skin to feed on blood. Ticks are about 0.2” (5 mm) long but can grow to 0.6” (15 mm) when feeding on blood.

Mites

Because the beetles are so tiny, the most common sign of them is webbing dangling on the inside of packaging. While these bugs walk to their death via traps or poison, make sure to clean up any damp or overly humid corners inside your house. Removing the source of the problem will prevent future infestations and make it harder for current silverfish to live. Ants can easily make their way inside through the tiniest of cracks and crevices, like those found in windows, walls, or home foundations. To get rid of these small bugs in the house, homeowners or renters will want to start by looking for and sealing any points of entry, then cleaning the surrounding areas. Because ants leave behind an invisible trail for other ants to follow, using soap and water to clean the trail can prevent future infestations.

Then, throw away all the boxes of sealed items like soup mixes or gelatin. Even if weevils don’t eat these items, they could enter the boxes to hide, only to reemerge later to contaminate your food. After you’ve tossed the affected foods, clean the pantry shelves and spray a household insecticide around the area. Earwigs, also known as pincher bugs, are small skinny brown-black bugs that have pincers and antennae. Earwigs are are easy to identify due to the pincers on the hind section of most species.

The common cluster fly is a small blackish flying house bug, identified by its black and brown mottled patterns in its thorax. The small fly has a slightly fuzzy appearance due to tiny hairs near its head. Flesh flies are another common type of household black flying bug. The tiny flies are slightly larger than houseflies, measuring 0.16” to 0.9” (4 – 22 mm) long.

In addition, mosquitoes are attracted to darkness, humidity, and standing water. Therefore, ensure that there are no leaking pipes under your sink. You can also grow mosquito-repelling plants in your house and yard. Getting rid of mosquitoes from a house is vital because they can spread disease when having a blood meal.

These services will do a lot to prevent cockroaches from coming into your home. To prevent cockroaches, do your best to keep your food stored where the cockroaches won't smell it or get into it. Take care of leaks and water damage so they don't have any added reasons to be in your home. The best way to rid your home of biting midges is to prevent them from entering through open doors and windows. It is also vital to eliminate any traces of standing water in your yard. And having tightly woven insect screens on windows is useful in areas prone to midge infestations.

After spotting this small brown beetle in the house or pantry, it’s wise for residents to throw out any infested food and thoroughly clean the cabinets. Applying insecticide with pyrethroids can kill any remaining little brown bugs, and sealing food tightly can prevent drugstore beetles from returning. Small black bugs are annoying creatures that range in size from 0.12” to 0.40” (3 – 10 mm). Small black household pests include ants, beetles, weevils, centipedes, and drain flies. Identifying beetles and weevils is easy as they have hard shells. Small black ants have recognizable slender bodies and tiny waists.

Houmas House Estate and Gardens

houmas house plantation

The family left for Columbia, South Carolina, where the young girl then died. They never returned to Houmas House, but those back in Louisiana who knew of the child’s love for the plantation mourned the loss. Once a sprawling plantation of more than 300,000 acres, Houmas House is a magnificent historical landmark that has survived wars, floods, abandonment — and the test of time. The historic Houmas House showcases what life was like on a sugarcane plantation in the 1800s and provides insight on the families who once lived there. The estate remained in the original family until 1925, when it was purchased by Andrew and Josephine Stewart. The plantation was inherited by the Oak Alley Foundation in 1972, after the Stewarts died, and became open to the public.

Little Girl Spotted By Houmas House Work Crew

The Houmas House Plantation is located about 20 miles from Oak Alley Plantation, which is famous for its photographic appeal. The engineers assigned to the project cited a change in the water table, damage from heavy equipment and other construction factors for the overnight transformation. Unfortunately 16 of the workers devised a scheme to profit from the large trees by floating the logs downriver to New Orleans. Not only did these men fail to make it to the city and collect any money, something happened to all of them and none of their bodies were ever recovered.

So much so, that when a new owner bought the estate at an auction in 2003, he did an extreme makeover. The Houmas House was stripped, scraped, scrubbed and renovated from top to bottom. In fact the plantation — once called “the crown jewel of Louisiana’s River Road” had lost its luster and fallen into disrepair in the 1990s. Passing under the Interstate, you will proceed straight ahead on Hwy 22, past the turnoff to Donaldsonville, the Cajun Village and in front of the Ascension Parish Visitor’s Center. Dating back to the 1700s, Wright's Chance is a Colonial period plantation house. Take a tour of the grounds, book a stay at the inn, plan your next special event with us, or learn more about local restaurants, things to do and what to see in the area. Although the plantation went on to change hands several times, the current main house was constructed by John Smith and Caroline Preston. This breathtaking Greek Revival structure is distinguished by its hipped roof and majestic Doric columns.

Nestled within the lush gardens, these cottages provide a tranquil escape and a chance to experience the Southern charm of the plantation after hours. The mansion is completely handicap accessible and each room provides several places to sit throughout the guided tour. If staying in New Orleans and seeking transportation, we suggest renting a car and visiting multiple plantations while seeing Houmas House. Houmas was the inspiration for The Antebellum, an 8,212 sqft estate and gardens in Grogan's Point. It is one of six historically inspired estates developed by the Westbrook Building Company in 1988.[10] In-kind, The Antebellum inspired three additional plantation estates in East Shore of The Woodlands.

In 1857 the Prestons sold the house, twelve thousand acres, and 550 slaves to John Burnside, an Irish immigrant and New Orleans merchant, for $1 million. Burnside expanded the plantation’s acreage, built four sugar mills, and acquired other plantations in Ascension and St. James Parishes. By 1862 Burnside was the nation’s foremost sugar producer, turning out 5,150 hogsheads of sugar (approximately five million pounds). Burnside was also known for the lavish balls he held at Houmas House. During the Civil War, General Benjamin Butler attempted to occupy the plantation house, but Burnside claimed immunity by convincing Butler he was a British subject. The house is stately and majestic inside and out, with period antiques, artwork and artifacts helping tell the story of plantation life.

She was so knowledgeable and also shared stories that made us laugh. The gardens were amazing and actually were the prettiest we have seen so far. We are on a Mississippi River Boat cruise, and this was one of our stops. There was also a very large gift shop and a great restaurant on the grounds. Off the menu specials are offered daily and posted on the Houmas House Facebook page. The estate also had a formal English garden with a central  walkway, as well as carriage pathways meandering off through the older oaks.

High heels are not recommended as the property is quite expansive. Our winters are mild, but occasionally it does get cold, so please be prepared. The mansion, restaurants, gift shop, and museum are all centrally air-conditioned and heated. Houmas House Plantation boasts immaculate grounds with meticulously maintained landscaping. Sculptures, exotic plants, and a Japanese footbridge adorn the expansive property, along with charming fountains. As you explore the premises, tranquility envelops you, offering a refreshing escape.

John Burnside, 48 years old when he acquired the Houmas, immediately began enlarging his holdings and purchasing other sugar plantations along the Mississippi River. In a very short time he was dubbed “The Sugar Prince,” by attaining the largest sugar empire in the South. Along with his properties on the Mississippi, Burnside also purchased the largest estate in the City of New Orleans, then known as the Robb Mansion. He collected great furnishings and great works of art to appoint both his city estate, later named “Burnside Place”, and his country estate, “The Houmas”. He shared his time between the two grand properties and entertained lavishly. At the age of 71, John Burnside, feeling ill, traveled to White Sulpher Springs, West Virginia for what he hoped would be a restful recovery.

During that historic event, the area around Houmas House was inundated with water for weeks. Two other crew members also reported seeing the little girl in the blue dress when they were working late, but no one knew who she was. Everyone who saw the girl said she had dark eyes and brunette hair, but disappeared before they could question her about her name.

Louisiana Plantation Tours

Plantations in Louisiana are one of the most sought after attractions throughout the state. Located between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, The Houmas House Estate allows visitors to experience the life on a sugarcane plantation in the 1800’s. The mansion has been restored to the antebellum era, reflecting the opulence and wealth this sugarcane farm boasted in the 1880’s. The guided mansion tour walks through the 250 year history, showing the architectural evolution of this manor house and how it became a grand estate.

Houmas House Plantation Grounds

During your visit to the Houmas House you can also visit the adjacent Great River Road Museum that features displays about life on the Mississippi. As the oaks grew, the intertwined canopy created a welcoming scene to visitors from the River Road who enjoyed their cooling shade. The little girl in the blue dress does appear to be the figment of someone’s overactive imagination because her presence has been witnessed by many people at Houmas House. According to records, the young daughter of Col. John Preston was the belle of Houmas House in the mid 1800s.

Guided Tours in Darrow, LA

Although it presents a historic appearance, this old portion of the house has been much reworked. Period antiques, artwork, and artifacts help the costumed guides tell the story of plantation life. Once sprawling over 300,000 acres, Houmas House has survived wars, floods, abandonment, and the test of time. Once you have explored the Houmas Estate, visit The Great River Road Steamboat Museum.

Dates Closed: Christmas Day, New Year’s Day

In the Spring of 2003, the Estate of Dr. George Crozat auctioned off the entire contents of the mansion and grounds. Kevin Kelly, a New Orleans Businessman, purchased the mansion and surrounding grounds and began the task of restoring the mansion and gardens. The mansion, having undergone over 200 years of construction and remodeling by various owners, reflected a multitude of styles. It was impossible to restore the house to a definite period without sacrificing elements from other important periods of its history. The choice was made to select the best features from various periods to showcase a legacy of each family in the mansion.

Nestled amidst the lush landscapes of Louisiana, the Houmas House Plantation stands as a testament to the region’s rich history and grandeur. We are still in the middle of our trip but I had to take a moment to review this team. We are currently staying in the deluxe suite on the grounds and it is perfect. We had dinner at Latils last night and not only was the food fantastic but Josh and Phyllis were inviting and provided great service. Today we toured the informative museum and toured the Mansion with Darrin who was amazing.

As we sit here sipping cocktails at Turtles Bar, I cant wait to see what the rest of our trip will bring. Get a glimpse into the history and life along the Mighty Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Explore river life on the east and west banks of the Lower Mississippi. This unique plantation definitely has plenty of history and lore that has been passed down for generations. If you’re interested in visiting this haunted Louisiana plantation, read on, because the Houmas House has another ghostly story tied to the construction of the levee.

She played games of tag in the gardens and hide-and-seek in the great house until she fell gravely ill in 1848. But when the renovated house opened to the public, sightings of the little girl began again. Both guides and guests have seen her and say she seems curious about all the activity. Along with deep ties to the land comes stories passed down from generation to generation. As I soon discovered during my visit, residents of the New Orleans area and all of South Louisiana have a deep sense of heritage that goes back many hundreds of years. The Houmas House Plantation is beautiful, but so are the haunting remains of a sugar plantation in Florida that was burned by the Seminoles in the 1830s.

Jessica James is an award-winning historical fiction author and life-long Gettysburg resident who loves sharing her passions for history and travel. She enjoys exploring the back roads of the USA and uncovering stories about unique destinations, cultures and almost-forgotten history. With its expansive gardens, stately mansion, restaurants and cottage, the Houmas House plantation also makes a wonderful wedding venue and is available for corporate events. In its early years, Houmas House plantation had an oak alley leading from the river’s edge to the house. These “allees” were (and still are) common in Louisiana because the trees help funnel the cooler air from the river straight to the residence.

Houmas House is a masterclass in horticulture, providing an opportunity to learn and appreciate the wonders of nature. The house is a stunning symmetrical antebellum structure featuring wrap-around decks on two floors, Federal arched dormers, majestic columns, and a decorative widow’s walk. Its allure is captivating, inspiring the desire to step inside or capture its beauty through the lens.

The French doors open into a courtyard shared by other guests, but surrounded by lush gardens. This expansive museum educates visitors about life on the Mississippi, exploring the culture, commerce, folklore, and music. Once you’ve completed this attraction, save time to walk across the bridge located in the parking lot to enjoy sweeping views of the Mississippi River and the surrounding landscape. Allow at least 4 hours for this visit to both Houmas House and The Great River Road Museum. A visit to Houmas House Plantation is a delightful experience, with one-hour tours of the mansion, gardens, and more available at $35.

Tickets to tour the Houmas Estate and The Great River Road Museum can be purchased upon arrival. After we got all settled in we went for a stroll through the gardens. It was amazing to see so many different garden areas with a variety of sculptures, water features, plants and historic artifacts. It was a working sugarcane plantation by 1803, when the United States obtained the area through the Louisiana Purchase. Shortly afterwards The Houmas was purchased by Daniel Clark, who began to develop the property and built one of the first sugar mills along this stretch of the river.

Finally, the family moved to New Orleans, and the Houmas was used mostly for weekend and Holiday retreats. In April of 1848, there were thirty family members and guests in residence at the Houmas, and just as many servants in the household. The lavish dinner tables were dressed with fish, shell fish and oysters from the Gulf, wild turkey, venison, duck from the swamp, and woodcock, snipe and birds shot by Preston and his guests in the fields. There was an abundance of beef and mutton from the plantation, as well as fruits and vegetables from the gardens. On a great curve of the Mississippi River and on high ground first selected by the Houmas Indians stand the great Tuscan columns of The Houmas.
